Today is beautiful! The windows are open so we can enjoy the fresh breeze on this welcomed cooler August day. It feels like a preview of the fall to come and that is my very favorite season! I can hear the breeze against the house and the rooster crowing proudly out in the pasture area.It is so relaxing!

Earlier I went out to check on my hubby who is hard at work replacing the steps on our porch. Our farmhouse has a beautiful wrap around porch but it is in need of some work! We will be painting the whole thing soon once the new lumber has cured. He is such a handy guy! Always doing something amazing for our homestead!

I decided while I was out I might as well go for or a walk around our homestead while my bread was rising. Some time to just enjoy soaking in the beauty of late summer. I have some beautiful blooms in my wildflower garden right now. This Mexican sunflower is one of my favorites!

Of course I had to stroll by our garden and then over to the pasture area to stop and say hello to our goats. Bella was very happy to see me and come lick my hand to check for treats!

With thoughts of fall on my mind I am excited to start baking more! Today I baked 2 loaves of fresh milled flour (a mix of rye and hard red wheat) sourdough sandwich bread. One is for dinner because I love a good crusty bread on the dinner table, don't you? I had some extra starter, know as discard to use. I still don't know why it is called discard lol, I rarely throw it out!

In fact I have cookie dough in the fridge chilling for chocolate chunk cookies for after dinner! Cookies are one of my favorite ways to use extra sourdough starter. I went and milled some soft white wheat real quick and snatched a few eggs from our egg basket. I may be biased but free range pasture raised chicken eggs are the best! My chickens lay eggs with these gorgeous dark yellow yolks, so good for you!

Is it me or do 2 loaves of bread never rise or bake the same? Oh well, it's always tasty and that's the most important part!

We know safety matters—especially when you're feeding children. But just as important to us is preserving the natural benefits that make raw milk so nourishing and unique. We model our practices after the Raw Milk Institute (RAWMI) standards, which are designed to produce raw milk with extremely low risk and consistently low bacterial counts—while keeping the living nutrition raw milk is famous for.

Why "Visibly Clean" Isn't Enough: The Hidden Danger of Biofilm in Raw Milk

Why "Visibly Clean" Isn't Enough: The Hidden Danger of Biofilm in Raw Milk Raw milk is an inherently safe and nutritious product when handled properly, but there’s a hidden risk that many people don’t know about: biofilm. It’s invisible, sneaky, and can harbor harmful bacteria—yet it doesn’t have to be a cause for concern. At Twisted Ash Farm, we use simple, cost-effective tools to detect biofilm and ensure that our milk remains clean and safe. In our latest blog post, we dive into what biofilm is, why it’s important to detect it, and how we keep our raw milk up to the highest safety standards. Whether you’re new to raw milk or a longtime fan, this post will help you understand why detection is key to enjoying raw milk with confidence. Check it out to learn more!
